Has anybody out there had a Suprapubic Catheter (catheter through your tummy) operation?  I am having one on Thursday after 6 years of agony and am really scared.

If anybody has had the op could they tell me if they had a local or general anaesthetic.  I have been told I can choose but not sure if I have a local if I will feel them prodding around in my stomach. Also wondered how long the op takes and is the pain bad afterwards.

Getting myself really worked up not knowing much about it.  I did try and ask my Consultant some things but his clinic had been double booked so he was rushing.  He did say he would come and see me before I go to theatre but need answers before then to calm me down.

Thanks

Hi Catherine,

I have had a supra before, it was done under general, I was having other surgery at the time.  It didnt feel to bad afterwards , it was 20 yrs ago... I can recall having some spasms afterwards and I was given buscopan which really helped.

I know others have had this done perhaps they will spot your message before thurs or pop along to http://www.incontact.org you may also find people there that have had this done.

Good luck for Thurs

best wishes

Dawn

Hi,

Some 12 years ago I went into acute retention and had a tube fitted in through my bladder - sort of mid through the lower part of my belly. I then had a bag attached to it to collect urine. Not sure if this is what they call a suprapubic catheter but if it is then I wouldn't worry about the op. The whole procedure took literally a couple of minutes and I had a local anaesthetic. I had it in for about a week and don't recall having any pain/discomfort from it. I did stay in hospital for the whole week howeber and was pumped full of anti-bs which may explain why I had no infection/soreness - this might have been a problem without the antibiotics.

hope your op goes well

best

Hi Catherine

I have a supra pubic I have had mine for over a year now.Mine was for different reasons than you I went into bad retention and could do ISC as was too pain full I had the op done under general The op dint take too long and they gave me morphine when I came round as it was very painfull (due to the nerve damage I have ) I dont think the op is too bad if you dont have the damage that I have .

The day to day liveing with it isnt too bad and if you have any questions please ask any time .

Going back to the op I had surgery was kept in over night then sent home the next day I hope that your op goes well and if you need to ask anything else before hand just shout!!

Thank you so much for all your replies.  you have all helped ease my mind.  I have been told if all goes well will come home later in the day after the op so suppose it can't be that bad if they are going to let me home.

Thanks again.
