I've been symtom free for the last couple of years. My problem was a UTI and bladder irritation that started immediately after having Mirena fitted. To cut a long story short, numerous courses of antibiotics later and no better, I was referred to a urologist who put me on Vesicare, then had a cystoscopy which showed an inflamed bladder and then he added in Trimethoprim every night.  Slowly slowly the periods of feeling inflamed reduced and I eventually stopped the Vesicare and Trimethoprim. I was never given a definitive diagnosis although I asked the GP on my recent visit what the uro's letter said and it said "chronic cystitis" whatever that is.

A couple of weeks ago the old symptoms returned, took a sample to GP, sent to lab, antibiotics given anyway, no bacteria found! Now have a horribly inflamed bladder which feels sore. As a long shot, I have purchased some Waterfall DM and have been using it religiously (along with copiois amounts of water, potassium citrate) for the last 4 days ... not a jot of difference. I just wondered, if it was going to work, shouldn't I have noticed something by now? Can anyone tell me their experience with this product and if it worked, how long it took?

I have tried different types of D-Mannose, in the end I settled for the Waterfall one as it has no other components added to it. Suffering from IC too I have a very sensitive bladder. My urine tests sometimes are positive, sometimes are negative. My uro tells me I have to keep D-mannose in for an hour, but I don't often manage that.  I am taking it as prevention as during an attack it will do nothing for me. Unfortunately last month I came to the conclusion that it doesn't work for me, however, I  have decided to try one more month...

I wonder if your bladder irritation could be triggered by certain foods.  Have you tried the IC diet? I would definetely give it a go, for at least a week.

Hi Toffee,
Ive been using d mannose on and off for over a year now and started using it in desperation after almost continuous cystitis for 3 months ! My bladder did eventually calm down-but whether it was the mannose alone I dont know.
I have managed to stop cystitis in the early stages before with this but sometimes it does nothing.
If I was you Id give it a couple of months for a fair trial-shame its so expensive !
Hope this helps

Yes, it's expensive but I don't mind if it works! After a few days of a more restricted diet / drinks, marshmallow root tea (yuck) and d-mannose, I think my symptoms may be easing up a little although they do have a tendency to come and go...

... so I will stick with it for the moment

Sel,

Hi. When you say your urologist says to keep D Mannose in for an hour - what does he mean?   If it is being taken orally and has to work its way through the digestive system how do you know when and how you are keeping it in for an hour?  Our urine forms in different levels, depending on our homeostasis etc. so surely it is impossible to know how long the actual D Mannose constituent itself would be staying in the bladder? Must also be dependent on how much D Mannose you are taking. Seemed a bit of a strange thing for a urologist to be saying?

Hi Petra,

We are told that one hour is thought to be the time needed by bacteria such as E. Coli to attach itself to the D-Mannose, or the other way round ... In the last issue of A Wee Ray of Hope, Sweet-Cures, the producers of Waterfall D-Mannose also suggest that.
In my last post on this thread I wrote I was going to try one more time and see how it went. So far this year I have had 4 attacks of BC, during or just after my period. In  Feb, May, June, and July. After that I decided to give it another go by working very hard at it. Very strict IC diet, Valium, at least twice a day, and above all 10 or 12 drops before going to bed, and 4 daily doses of Waterfall D-Mannose as prevention (as mentioned in the earlier email it will do nothing for me during an attack).
About 3 days before my August period was due I also took an antiflammory called "Aulin" due to  a suspected inflamed Bartholin gland for a week. So that might have helped too, although not sure ...
The Valium has decreased my night frequency substantially and has helped me to keep the D-Mannose in for much longer, sometimes even  3, 4 hours. When I wake up to urinate I take more D-Mannose and more water. While during the day I consider myself  lucky if I can keep it for an hour. Well, in August I did not have BC!!! My period is due now in a few days, it goes wothout saying that I am already in a state of panic, I'll see what happens and keep you posted.
In my country, Italy, several types of D-Mannose are being sold, but they contain other components, I am not saying they're not good  products but being also an IC sufferer I prefer the plain, pure Waterfall one.
The amount of D-Mannose and water you take depends on the capacity of your bladder,  the time of the year, we have had an horrendously hot, muggy summer, weather CB thrives in. I always add a tiny bit of bibarbonate of soda in my D-Mannose, it works better in an alkaline enviroment, although now I'd like to get Prelief for a change.

I don't know if that answers your very interesting questions. Apologies for my English, but it is rather late for me in the evening, I get tired very easily.

Hi Sel,

Thank you for your reply and sharing your knowledge of Waterfall D Mannose (and your English is absolutely excellent by the way !).  Really useful, I might try some. I was always a little concerned that the sugar element of D Mannose would make things like candida worse - if there is candida overgrowth in the bladder maybe the D Mannose sugars would be feeding it!
Still anything is worth trying. Hope if you try it again it helps. Keep us posted.

Hi Petra,

No, D-Mannose does not contribute to candida.
Something that I forgot to mention last night is that I also take some specifc probiotcs, last one I am on can be taken both orally and, during an attack of BC,  vaginally.
Next week, all being well (as long as I remain CB free), I'll be off to see my uro, who's not exactly round the corner from me ...
