Hi all,

I am new to this site and have only posted once before. I am a 33 year old from Scotland and I have had many bladder infections over the years which have all responded well to antibiotics until last month. I was on holiday and started feeling a burning sensation and a feeling of fullness of the bladder- previously I had always had a lower UTIs and this felt more upper. As I was in the states I went to see an out of hours doc who prescribed Cefalexin, which worked almost immediately. Once I came home, my symptoms came back a week and a half later to which I was given Cefalexin, Amoxicilian and cipro in that order- nothing worked to take the constant burning feeling away. After finding this website, and the information on it, I realised that I had started to eat bread again on holiday (white bread), which I had not eaten for many years as I am a bit of a health freak, and I ate a scone once home a week and a half later which made my bladder really sore the same night, which made me come to the conclusion I have some sort of yeast allergy/build up in my body, so bought pro-biotics, anti-candida tablets, clean diet etc and took some antihistamines too. During this time, due to myself having private healthcare, I got referred very quickly to a Uro at a private hospital and got an ultrasound done. He seems to think that I have got IC and my ultrasound showed that I am retaining 75mls of urine after urination and wants to do a bladder and urethra stretch, however I am not so convinced. My bladder has flared up again in the last day or two, due to overeating at Christmas ( especially chocolate which I think has made it sore again) but i don't have any major symptoms of IC- I.e I can hold my pee in, I do go to the toilet a lot but I always drink loads of water, and it's not any worse or sore during my period. Do you think I should go through with the stretch or get a second opinion? Can you change Uro consultant if private? He seems to think the stretch will help, but I have not had symptoms that long and I do think it's more a food allergy thing. Do I get tested for food allergies instead? I am so confused and don't know what to do. My bladder feels very sensitive and burning feeling which has just flared up again after about 2 weeks of relative normality, however I have always had a sensitive bladder- I.e can't drink tea/coffee all day and need to drink water with alcohols. Any help much appreciated!!

Thank you

Nicola

Hi Nikki99

You could have IC. Everyone has different symptoms with IC. Some have urgency, some don't, some feel relief on emptying the bladder and others feel awful afterwards when the bladder goes into spasm. Some have a constant feeling of pressure in the bladder, pricking sensations, total discomfort, feeling like the bladder is on fire.  IC is inflammation of the bladder wall.

You have had a lot of antibiotics and it is well known now that most bugs, bacteria are totally resistant to antibiotics due to overprescribing. Initially people can feel better, but then the bacteria just go into a kind of hibernation only to reappear in a stronger mutated form. Microbiologists have been telling this to the doctors for years but they don't seem to be getting the hang of what they are being told.

You could well have an allergy to candida and yeast if you have candida overgrowth. It is commonly thought that only people with totally compromised immune systems can have systemic candida overgrowth i.e. people on chemotherapy, who have AIDS, radiotherapy or other chronic auto-immune conditions. But anyone who has been on short or long courses of antibiotics can have this which affects the bladder and other organs.

You could also be gluten sensitive. Candida and gluten share the same protein strains and therefore the body will react to both or either of them, attacking self (i.e. bladder cells) thinking they are the enemy. This is what auto-immune conditions are - misinterpretation of what the body is reacting to and then insead it attacks itself causing massive inflammation.  You need to continue with the candida diet and probably get tested for allergies, although the hospital testing is pretty poor as it only looks at immediate allergy (i.e. IgE testing) which is rarely the problem - it is the delayed, systemic allergies that are the problem.

What is the point of stretching your bladder !  I had his done for exactly the same reasons and it ruined my life. What justification is there in doing bladder stretching for you - what will it achieve. If you have inflammation in the bladder from say fungal overgrowth, stretching the bladder will not do any good. It seems to be the automatic response of doctors - it is written in the old textbooks and they still continue to do it.

They need to be getting to the root cause of your bladder inflammmation.  If you have bladder stretching - you need to find out what their take on it is first - why? what does it achieve?

Your bladder needs to heal, and stretching it could cause more trauma like it did for me.

Hi Icy,

Thanks so much for your response. Can I ask how many bladder stretches you had done and what the impact was on your bladder afterwards? I dont want to go through with something that might affect the rest of my life, as I am also on fertility drugs trying to conceive my first child. I have had discomfort over the past few days again and I just feel so down about it. Im managing work but im so depressed and feel helpless.

What do you think the best course of action is?

I am similar to you, I have a 20yr history of UTI's that always cleared up quickly until 6 months ago.

I am the same - sugary foods etc make me far worse. I got a very good response by cutting out all sugar, yeast and gluten. I was so bad I could only drink water!

My first urologist wanted to do a stretch and I refused. I've had a stretch before and it is painful afterwards. I agree with Icy it is a very outdated way of doing things. I would at least get a second opinion before going ahead with this.

I had severe inflammation and like you was told I was retaining 100mls. I got this inflammation right down to retaining just 30mls just with the diet and a good quality pro-biotic.

I have had a blow out over christmas and eaten what I like and my bladder is still not too bad at all.

I have an appointment with a specialist doctor in January and I am researching and experimenting with natural remedies.

Feel free to message me if you wish as I've had a similar experience.

BTW if you go private you can choose the consultant. I just had my fourth consultant approved!

Some people still swear by this stretching procedure but please do not think it is the only option. There are those of us (who've had it done) that think it is barbaric pointless torture.
