I am a Microbiologist who has worked for blue chip Pharmaceutical Companies and studied antibiotics for more than 15 years. I am also a UTI sufferer since the age of 6.

I recently had a UTI that I treated with 4 different antibiotics with zero effect. I did not want to take more antibiotics so started to serve the net to find alternative cures.

Your site is excellent and I have tried many of the remedies listed.

I also found earthclinic.com that has some more remedies.

I also searched for the clinical data to find the evidence base.

I tried d mannose

grapefruit seed extract

apple cider vinegar

Turmeric

olive leaf extract.

All worked for three days then the infection came back.

I have therefore concluded that they are probably all bacteriostatic i.e stop numbers of bacteria increasing but do not resolve the infection.

Antibiotics are either bacteristatic or bacteriocidal i.e kill the bacteria. What we want is bactericidal or to change the flora so good bacteria can outnumber the bad.

The next part  was looking at acidophilus. There is no evidence to support that acidophilus has any effect. Lactobacillus  acidophilus species in the gut makes no difference to UTI in the bladder. We need ecoli for digestion so upping lactobacillus will not change this.

However Lactobacillus species in the vagina make a massive difference to UTI. The bacterial flora of the vagina can change the bacterial flora of the bladder.  There are 27 clinical trials to support this the species they found helped was lactobacillus rhamnous and lactobacillus  reuteri.

After 5 weeks of battling the UTI I added in a probiotic containing these two species to apple cider vinegar and finally I have resolved this.  I took 2/day for 3 days. I took femdophilus but there are other brands.

What you are doing here is changing the bacteria in the bladder so the good ones can suppress the bad ones giving the symptoms so try adding in the right probiotic to your chosen cure.

I think what would also be really helpful is to collate a table so numbers of people reporting cures can be listed so the most effective ones can be found.

Gabrielle ,Thankyou for sharing your experiment with us all. Can I ask how were the probiotics administered to reach the vagina . Did you use a pessary?

There are trials using pessaries and also oral use. In the same way the gut flora gets into the bladder to cause infection. They work by correcting the urogenital flora by increasing vaginal healthy bacterial count which reduces the nasty uropathogenic bacteria .

I took oral femdophilus as the trials have shown that oral changes the vaginal flora as well as the pessaries.

They wont work on their own for treatment  I think you need to also add something that will attack the bacteria.
Any of the above will do this

There are tons of studies some are for prevention some for cure just google

Delighted this has worked for you. I know The COB office would be interesting in discussing this further with you and also your request to compile a list of cures for cystitis sufferers. Do give them a call.

Hello Gabrielle

Thank you for sharing your information and personal research with us. A table documenting products which are helpful may be difficult as different approaches work for different people. I do know of some whose urinary tract infection has been completely resolved with one of the products you list while for others it has not been useful at all. Please contact me in the office if you would like to discuss things further.

Hi Gabrielle

Great post.  Have heard good reports on Femdophilus and have been meaning to try it for ages. Will definitely get hold of some.  One lady I came across also inserted vaginally and felt it was more effective.

Did you mix the powders into the apple cider vinegar?

I took tabs of everything.
As a child I drank bottles of potassium citrate now makes me gag!! So I am nice to myself take the tabs.

The best one to combine with is d-mannose but it will only work for e.coli

Dear All

I wanted to reply to this interesting post - and it is intreating coming from a lady who is a Microbiologists so has first hand experience in her career of anti-biotic research.

The UK government has launched a review into antibiotics - looking for huge investment for the next round of antibiotics - before it is too late for humanity - and there is a big report launched this week which can be down-loaded from this official website.

http://amr-review.org/home

For the past 5 years, I have used a chinese alternative doctor in Los Angeles for my IC and recurring bladder infections. This is what she is doing - to rebalance the gut and bladder flora for infections - she works on the whole body but also uses very strong anti-biotic herbs to fight infections - all infections - chest, throat - not just UTIs.

Recently I had a very bad throat infection. I could hardly swallow and was in bed feeling very rough. She put me on very strong anti-microbial herbs (two different combinations over the seven days) and within seven days I was feeling completely well!!!!!!!!!

I think the medical profession should be looking much more at alternative medicine for routine and even chronic and acute infections - if there was a global list of certified alternative practitioners like my doctor who had years of experience treating infections (chronic and acute) then in conjunction with modern medicine both doctors could be used. My doctor is not against western medicine - she knows its place - but I got IC due to over-use of antibiotics for UTIs all my life - my bladder went into melt-down in 2008 due to anti-biotic toxicity - so I know that antibiotics also have side effects as-well as being life saving.

The problem is that there is no such database of alternative practitioners globally - either here on in the US - why not -if these doctors are helping people every day with infections - chronic and acute- surely the established medical profession and public need to know about them and a better dialogue can begin between these different approaches to fighting infections.

In the end we all just want to be well - that should be the aim here.

It takes great skill to be able to treat infections in an alternative way - as sometimes it might take months to clear an infection using alternative methods - rather than 7 days like antibiotics. What I have found that there are not many alternative medicine that have had this experienced. For 20 years - I am 40 - I was looking for alternative practitioners in the UK who could help me when I was a young adult with my bladder infections- again I found a chinese medical doctors near where my parents lived  and used him for 10 years in my twenties - with great success but he has sadly retired.

I know people have used a chinese doctor in North London too with great success for their recurring bladder infections too. And also a gifted acupuncturist near London who also treats alot of recurring bladder infections too.

I wish the new UK government who is now talking alot about anti-biotic resistance would also put some resources into alternative practitioners/medicine - and much more could be done to skill up alternative practitioners in the UK and make some centres of excellent for all of this - even though I am very pleased my doctor is doing what she is doing in Los Angeles and I am ever grateful for her dedication and expertise as she has profoundly helped not just my IC but also my general education about these issues. The US does seem to be further ahead with functional medicine - I also use a functional doctor here too in London - who also is very good - but he has a waiting list of over a year which is riduclous when you really think about it - but it is because he is so good too - and too many sick people out there looking for a functional medical response to their health problems and might not be being helped by the NHS as much as they should be due to the model of medicine being use.

Do get in-contact if you have any ideas about this very important issue - anti-biotic use for infections and alternative practitioners in the UK treating these as the more knowledge we all have about these issues the better.

Best wishes

Ashdown

Hi Gabrielle,

Thanks for your thread, I sympathise, I have also suffered recurring uti's for the last 20 years.  I am very much into natural health and alternatives and I hate taking antibiotics. I just wanted to ask about re-setting the vaginal flora, can you also insert a probiotic to get the same affect of rebuilding vaginal flora?

Thanks
Lana

Thanks for sharing Ashdown. I have bought said probiotic. Also a lot of research papers on tests done on pessaries containing lactobacillus crispatus. I can only find one product in the States that has this...needs to be sent on ice and costs around 70 quid so I have emailed the pharmaceutical company directly.
