NOTE: I do not suffer from IC or other bladder disesase, just recurrent cystitis. The below worked very well for me but I can't vouch that it would be good or even recommended for anything else so please be aware of that when considering it. Hi, I want to share this with you all and I realise that what works for one may not work for others but I really hope this will help someone else because I am convinced that the logic behind this is sound, from my own experience anyway! I had recurrent cystitis for 3 months - after week long doses of antibiotics three times in a row I was desperate for a cure. I went the holistic route based on my own knowledge of berries and logic. 2 bouts were bacterial and the last was non-bacterial. From the 1st moment that I could feel the symptoms of the onset of an attack, I cut out all sugar, spices, alcholol and caffeine & drank only water & I mean a full glass every hour for 2 or 3 days. I drank right up until bedtime to ensure then that I would empty my bladder before sleep (very important), same in the morning. I bought bags of frozen cranberries from my supermarket (handy to stash in the freezer as you'll always have them if need be). The real key is to take, every hour WITH the glass of water, a good handful of these fresh frozen berries (avoid juice as it contains added sugar, a no-no and is a lot. lot, lot less concentrated). THis is the cornerstone of this cure being successful. My cystitis was so bad I passed blood in 1st attack. My doctor said my plan of action would not work, so did the chemist and I admit that their logic was not flawed because a few cranberries will not rid this ailment. What they failed to understand is that cranberries if eaten raw and in high enough quantities, constantly, are the best medicinal answer as nature intended - highly concentrated and in very large quantities. What they didn't know was that I manged to eat 2 large bags of berries over 3 days. Eating the berries is no fun which is why i recommend frozen as they are slighly easier to take, a bit like a trat ice-cream, but the alternative is unfortunatley antibiotics for weeks, months or even years. THis is not a good long-term solution. IF you get the quantities right of fresh berries and fluid intake right, you can cure an attack dead. It will take 2-3 days to work - you will know this plan of attack is working because each time you urinate you will find that your urine taurns from dark, cloudy, heavy colour to almost water-like by day 2-3. Pain and stinging will start to subside after day 1 hopefully, at least it did for me but you must ensure you take the berries every hour so the effect is CONSTANT and the bladder is being perpetually cleansed and soothed over the 3 days. I think doctors think this won't work because they assume sufferers will just take a glass of cranberry juice every so often. That will NOT work. Cranberry juice is a product, it is not anywhere near as potent as large quantities of fresh cranberries. It takes dilligence to make yourself follow this every waking hour (glass of water with a handful of berries) but it is worth it. I believe the trick is the combination of powerful cleansing berries which get rid of the stinging and thus the pain, combined with constant fluid so the bladder and urethra etc are being flushed thoroughly over 2-3 days. All irritants are excluded (sugar, caffeine, spices, etc). The bladder gets what it really needs (a break and a good cleanse) and because the intake of fluid is constant bacteria if there is any will get "washed out". After this works, you really should make a simple change to your life - drink fluids more often than you used to and don't wait to go to the toilet 2 or three times a day as you would have done before (that just keeps the bladder full and ripe for bacteria). Try to urinate frequently even if it's just a teeny amount - as long as you're using your bladder you are not storing up problems. If you can, also cut down on sugar or cut it out, it's not that hard! I baffled my doctor and urologist but then again, no-one in med school taught them about how potent some natural foods really are and I'm afraid unless someone's published a journal with proof, they will probably tell you, as they did me, that cranberries alone will not cure the cystitis. They did not believe that I did not take antiobiotics and were quie honestly flabbergasted when I told them how many berries I manged to ingest in the 3 days (note that I also ate other food, this is not a diet!). The trick I believe is to combine the steps above (fluid, berries, empty bladder often, cut out the irritants). I work with animals and what I find compelling is that they will often seek out herbs and vegitation to cure an ailment. I grew up with horses and what I learned years ago is that some (not all) natural cures are highly effective if taken in the CORRECT doses (and that's the trick with cranberries). I know this approach can work very well because I learned to treat hoof infections in show horses by using vegatable poultices to draw out infection. We did this successfully many times without restoring to antiobitics, mush to the amusement of the local VET who we managed to convince once he understood my grandfathers logic that it's not what you use, it's the quantity and method in which you use it in. This really is the crux of the cure. In a world of medicines we have forgotten how to do this and trust me I know they have their place, my own father is a doctor! I hope this routine works for someone else, I really do, but please be religious about following this routine as I did and I hope you will get the results I did. It will cost next to nothing and is my free advice to anyone on a mission to rid themselves of this common problem which made my life a misery. What you put into your body is what it is. Nature has a place but we have a lot to learn on that! Be mindful that this common problem does have a common and easy solution. Let me know how you get on, I'd love to hear more successes with this. All the best x Magoo. PS: I forgot to mention that it's vital too that you follow very good hygiene parctice during and after an attack (i.e. wash and dry gently completley) and make sure you are not allergic to cranberries - worth running it past your doctor just to make sure that taking large doses of cranberries will not affect any meds you are on or cause you any issues based on your medical history - just some common sense stuff to be aware of. Finally, if the doctor says it's worth a try, you're OK to do it, but he/she doesn't believe it works, thank them and tell them you'd like to prove their theory wrong. I know this works. I'm proof it does.

Hello there. Thanks for your post it was interesting to read. I hope you don't mind my telling you my experience of horrible hirrible cystitus. I am 20 years old and have suffered from cystitus since I started having sex when I was 16. I managed to keep my cystitus at bay for the past 7 months, by making sure I go to the toilet before and after I have sex, drinking lots of water throughout the day, and so on.. (previous to this 7 month free period of no cystitus attacks I used to get it about every 3 motnhs!) But today I have had the mother off all cystitus attacks, my whole body hurt. I went to the doctors and they gave me some antibiotics which I hope start kicking in soon. However I do not always have anti-biotics on stand by and don't want to continue to through with this horrible feeling ever again and i'm desperate for a cure. I feel like I can no longer continue to have sex with out the worry in the back of my mind (will I have another attack?) but I don't want to have to make that choice. I just really want some insight in how to control frequent attacks. I am considering to go to the Doctors and asking if I can have a constant supply of antibiotics, but surely your body will come ammune to them??? I appreciate any answer you may have. Thankyou

I am so happy to find this forum and share my "cure" for recurrent bladder infections which I suffered from for at least 15 years. My son told me that he had a complete nutrition work-up at the University of Denver and was told among other things to take a supplement that is found at Sprouts Market locally. It is a one a day Omega 3 capsule. I started taking this everyday and found that my urine immediately was acid every morning upon waking. Usually when I am about to get an infection I can tell my urine becomes alkaline then cloudy with infection. If I drank alcohol I almost always got an infection so I stopped. Maritial relations also often sparked an infection. Bacteria loved me as my doctor used to say. No more!
Now, if I drink I take a Sprouts Omega 3 one a day. I take one every morning without fail, but if I think I may have eaten or drank something or any other behavior that used to cause bladder infections, I take a one a day Omega. So far so good. My bladder is extremely healthy. I hope this helps you. __________________ peanutbutter
